Isn’t it amazing how scent takes us back to the past?
The scent of lilacs reminds me of my mother’s favorite flower and her Mason jar bouquets. Those fresh flowers on our kitchen table filled the house with fragrance and reed diffusers can duplicate the feelings.
Did you know that the human brain can identify more than 10,000 smells?
Your nose has at least 350 different odorant receptor proteins and they detect scents in the air. The receptor proteins combine in different combinations to identify scent molecules entering the nose.
Coded Signals
The coded signals transfer from the nose to the olfactory bulb in the brain, and from the olfactory bulb, the signals transfer to the cortex. Finally, the cortex maps them as “odor perceptions” where they remain throughout your lifetime.
This is how a certain scent reminds you of a certain place or a time in your life.
